Safety & Emergency Procedures
Accident Reports
When an accident or incident occurs, refer to the campus policy on reporting a claim for personal injury. The proper report(s) must be completed:
- UIUC and UIS Public Injury Report form (PDF)
- UIUC and UIS Property Damage Report form (PDF)
Send the completed report as indicated on the form. Additionally, send it to safety@business.illinois.edu.
After-Hours Emergencies
- CALL 911 IN THE CASE OF AN EMERGENCY.
- For after-hours building or service emergencies, please call F&S Service Office at 217-333-0340.
- The Service Office line will connect to the Division of Public Safety to dispatch the appropriate trade.
- Please only use this service for true building or service emergencies.
After-Hours Building Access
Facilities are open to the public during regular building hours. However, Gies Business employees may access the buildings after-hours. Access varies by building.
BIF
After-hours building access is available for Gies Business employees who have office space in BIF using their personal i-Card. Public access to the fourth floor is Monday through Friday from 7 am to 6 pm. Those with offices on the fourth floor may access the floor after hours using their personal i-Card.
Wohlers Hall
After-hours building access is available for Gies Business employees using a key issued directly to the individual. Public access to floors three and four is available Monday through Friday from 7 am to 10 pm. Gies Business employees may use their facility key to access these floors after hours. Remember to carry personal identification when in the facility after-hours.
Irwin Doctoral Study Hall
Gies Business PhD students are authorized to access Irwin after-hours using their personal i-Card.
Basement of the Business Instructional Facility
- The Business Instructional Facility basement is considered a mechanical space and limited access is given.
- The basement may be used as a tornado shelter 8 am - 4:30 pm Monday through Friday. Facilities staff will need to open basement doors. After 4:30 pm on weekdays and on the weekends, the Wohlers Hall 141 auditorium or basement spaces should be used.
Building Emergency Action Plans (BEAP)
Be prepared for emergency occurrences by viewing the safety directives listed below.
Tornado (Take Cover)
- Take cover in a designated shelter location.
- BIF - If time does not allow one to take cover in the basement of Wohlers Hall or the Armory Building, take cover in the basement stair wells of BIF.
- Wohlers Hall and Irwin Doctoral Study Hall - Move to designated shelter areas in the basements or lowest level available.
- Do not use the elevators unless you are a person with disabilities.
- Evacuate the upper floors in an orderly fashion.
- Provide assistance to any person with disabilities when moving to the shelter area.
- Designated individuals in each department should take a battery-operated radio tuned to WILL AM 580 or WXJ-76 (162.550 MHZ) and a flashlight with them to the shelter area.
- Designated personnel in each department should, as they proceed to the shelter area, check areas of the building to make certain all personnel have been evacuated.
- If classes are in session, faculty are expected to instruct the students to go to the designated shelter location. Please familiarize yourself with these locations for each Gies facility.
- Once in the shelter area people should:
- Assume a seated position on the floor or under a sturdy piece of furniture with head down and hands locked over the head.
- Leave a passageway through the center of each shelter area.
- Keep away from outside walls, doors, and windows.
- Monitor the radio for emergency information or instructions.
- If no further siren alerts are sounded, you may leave the shelter area after 30 minutes or after receiving the all clear by College personnel.
Fire (Run/Get Out)
- Evacuate the building.
- BIF – Go to the Huff Hall Main Gym (Room 100).
- Wohlers Hall and Irwin Doctoral Study Hall - Go to the BIF Deloitte Auditorium (Room 1001).
- Provide assistance to any person with disabilities when moving to the safety area as elevators cannot be used.
Active Threat/Active Shooter (Run, Hide, or Fight)
- If you perceive immediate bodily threat either lock down office/unit/classroom and move to a safe place within the office/unit/classroom or if you feel safe to do so, evacuate the building.

Suspicious Package (Run/Get Out)
- Do not open or touch the package.
- Evacuate the building.
- BIF – Go to the Huff Hall Main Gym (Room 100).
- Wohlers Hall and Irwin Doctoral Study Hall - Go to the BIF Deloitte Auditorium (Room 1001).
- Call 9-1-1 from an office phone. DO NOT USE YOUR CELL PHONE as it may detonate explosive material.
